Labeling AI-Generated Images on Facebook, Instagram and Threads Meta

To test and confirm this hypothesis, we progressively modify each subsequent image in the sequence, methodically enhancing them with additional features such as buildings and roads. These augmentations represent increased wealth and development as perceived by the AI model. The sequence of images displayed above serves a crucial purpose in our research. It begins with a baseline satellite image of a village in Tanzania, which our AI model categorises as “poor”, probably due to the sparse presence of roads and buildings. Such features might include (but are not limited to) the density of roads, the layout of urban areas, or other subtle cues that have been learned during the model’s training.

The Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) was founded by Adobe and Microsoft, and includes tech companies like OpenAI and Google, as well as media companies like Reuters and the BBC. C2PA provides clickable Content Credentials for identifying the provenance of images and whether they’re AI-generated.

So by repeatedly adjusting the image, the resulting visualisation gradually evolves into what the network “thinks” wealth looks like. This visual progression shows how the AI is visualising “wealth” as we add things like more roads and houses. The characteristics we deduced from the model’s “ideal” wealth image (such as roads and buildings) are indeed influential in the model’s ChatGPT assessment of wealth. Such proficiency echoes the superhuman achievements of AI in other realms, such as the Chess and Go engines that consistently outwit human players. Finally, OpenAI is also working with C2PA to develop and improve a robust standard for digital content certification. It will find the original AI image and you can verify all the changes then and there.

And while AI models are generally good at creating realistic-looking faces, they are less adept at hands. An extra finger or a missing limb does not automatically imply an image is fake. As you peruse an image you think may be artificially generated, taking a quick inventory of a subject’s body parts is an easy first step. AI models often create bodies that can appear uncommon—and even fantastical.

The code hints at an upcoming AI identification feature that could play a crucial role in navigating the complexities of digital imagery. With AutoML Vision, the barrier to entry is primarily data collection—that is, capturing and correctly tagging thousands of images for training. There’s more ways to capture images than ever (via drones, cell phones, live feeds, or social media), but the means of capturing data is far from democratized. Hidden in the usual marketing speak of Google’s blog post, there’s a clear understanding that democratizing the technology could, eventually, reverberate through a number of fields.

The model weights with the highest AUROC on the validation set will be saved as the model checkpoint for internal and external evaluation. As the difference between human and synthetic content gets blurred, people want to know where the boundary lies. People are often coming across AI-generated content for the first time and our users have told us they appreciate transparency around this new technology. So it’s important that we help people know when photorealistic content they’re seeing has been created using AI. We do that by applying “Imagined with AI” labels to photorealistic images created using our Meta AI feature, but we want to be able to do this with content created with other companies’ tools too. We replace the primary SSL approach (that is, masked autoencoder) with SimCLR16, SwAV37, DINO38 and MoCo-v3 (ref. 14) in the RETFound framework to produce variants of the pretrained model for comparison.

We notice that the models with CFP and OCT achieve unequal performances in predicting systemic diseases (Fig. 3 and Supplementary Table 3), suggesting that CFP and OCT contain different levels of information for oculomic tasks. Cattle can be identified using biometric features such as muzzle print image12, iris patterns13, and retinal vascular patterns14. While the utilization of biometric sensors could reduce the burden on human experts, it still presents certain obstacles in terms of individual cattle identification, processing time, identification accuracy, and system operation. Animal facial recognition is a biometric technology that utilizes image analysis tools. Cattle can be identified by analyzing cow face images, similar to how human face recognition works, due to the absence of distinct patterns on their bodies15.

Models are fine-tuned on one diabetic retinopathy dataset and externally evaluated on the others. The models are fine-tuned to predict the conversion of fellow eye to wet-AMD in 1 year and evaluated internally. For each task, we trained the model with five different random seeds, determining the shuffling of training data, and evaluated the models on the test set to get five replicas. The watermark is robust to many common modifications such as noise additions, MP3 compression or speeding up and slowing down the track. SynthID can also scan the audio track to detect the presence of the watermark at different points to help determine if parts of it may have been generated by Lyria. SynthID’s first deployment was through Lyria, our most advanced AI music generation model to date, and all AI-generated audio published by our Lyria model has a SynthID watermark embedded directly into its waveform. We’ve expanded SynthID to watermarking and identifying text generated by the Gemini app and web experience.

That’s why we’ve been working with industry partners to align on common technical standards that signal when a piece of content has been created using AI. If the count drops below a pre-established threshold, we do a more detailed examination of the RANK2 data to identify another potential ID that occurs frequently. The cattle are identified as unknown only if both RANK1 and RANK2 do not match the threshold.
